There is a lot of planning that goes into testing, from understanding the application requirements and user stories, to strategizing a test approach, test environments setup, test data setup, test automation, release support, etc. A lot of details, moving parts, integrations and dependencies to track. Despite our preparation, there are controlled and uncontrolled factors that can impact our progress and disrupt our focus and deliverable. The most common of all is attention contention. In our current fast paced industry, filled with interrupts, competing priorities, shift, change of direction and aggressive schedules, attention contention is inevitable. It has become a non-favorable integral part of the norm, surfacing in personal and professional interactions and often lurking in the silence disrupting our ability to focus on the moment or the task at hand. At its peak, it can detract from our ability to productively and adequately deliver on testing tasks. We all suffer from it by varying degrees and usually unaware of it. Join me in this session as we discuss Attention Contention, its implications and some steps to mitigate and maximize productivity in test.
